Schaliegas - het nieuwste paard van troje

Kernenergie, nanodeeltjes in voeding en cosmetica, ADHD medicatie voor kwetsbare kinderen, ziekmakende fructose als zoetstof, genetisch gemanipuleerde planten maar ook schaliegas zijn voor de overheid geen enkel probleem. De economie gaat wederom voor onze gezondheid.

Minister Verhagen (CDA) kon destijds niet wachten om te beginnen. Men negeert de problemen die sinds jaren spelen in de VS en Canada en denkt opnieuw het wiel te kunnen uitvinden. Je zou verwachten dat het CDA juist het belang van de boeren ipv de vervuilende olieindustrie zou dienen.

In plaats van te focussen op schone energie richt men zich opnieuw op vervuilende vormen die iets van de 20ste eeuw zijn. Beleid is voor de overheid steeds meer iets van de korte termijn. De baten gaan nl de lasten vooruit. En kritische geluiden worden als vanouds in de kiem gesmoord. Zelfs het Brabantse waterleidingbedrijf gaat ineens 180 graden om. 

Als je echt een gezondere leefomgeving wilt spreek dan onze politici aan op hun beleid. Wie zwijgt stemt toe.... en wie op regenten stemt kan meer van dit soort wondermiddelen verwachten. Tijd om wakker te worden en ons nageslacht te beschermen tegen ziekmakende plannen van gewetenloze multinationals. Er zijn meer dan genoeg schone alternatieven zonder risico's voor onze bodem en grondwater.

Vitens, ’s lands grootste waterbedrijf, vindt dat de kwestie rond schaliegas nu te veel draait om energie en het economisch perspectief en te weinig over de risico’s die er kleven rondom drinkwatervoorziening. Het waterbedrijf publiceert vandaag daarom vooruitlopend op het onderzoek een lijst met mogelijke risico’s die er kleven aan de winning van schaliegas voor het drinkwater.

17 april debatteert de Tweede Kamer over schaliegaswinning in Nederland. Vitens hoopt dat de drinkwaterwinning een belangrijk onderdeel wordt van het debat. Mocht er zich een calamiteit voordoen, dan is de impact in Nederland relatief groot. De schaliegasvoorraden bevinden zich in Nederland in dichtbevolkte gebieden. Dit in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de Verenigde Staten. Dit maakt de bevolking ook afhankelijk van de watervoorraden, want bij een calamiteit heeft dit directe gevolgen voor de mensen die er wonen. Zo kan een waterbedrijf bij een grootschalige calamiteit niet altijd opvangen met grootschalige drinkwaterlevering van een alternatief pompstation. Dit kan de levering van drinkwater in Nederland in gevaar brengen.

Vitens is het grootste waterbedrijf van Nederland en heeft 110 pompstations die bij elkaar water leveren aan 5,7 miljoen Nederlanders. Bij waterwinning wordt grondwater uit watervoerende lagen onttrokken die zich tientallen kilometers onder de grond kunnen uitstrekken. Deze watervoerende lagen staan met elkaar in verbinding wat de winning kwetsbaar maakt voor verontreiniging. Lieve Declercq, voorzitter van de Directie van Vitens: “Bij twijfel moet je niet inhalen. Dat geldt ook voor ons. Er mogen simpelweg geen risico’s kleven aan dit verhaal, want de gevolgen zijn te groot.”

Top 10 zorgenlijst
Vitens heeft vandaag de lijst met belangrijkste zorgen ten aanzien van schaliegaswinning op haar website geplaatst. Deze punten zijn reeds ingebracht bij het ministerie van Economische Zaken. Vitens vertrouwt erop dat met het onderzoek naar de winning van schaliegas alle risico’s in kaart worden gebracht. Het waterbedrijf is geen principieel tegenstander van de winning naar schaliegas en snapt goed de economische voordelen voor Nederland. Maar gezien de vitale maatschappelijke functie van drinkwater moet de winning van Schaliegas daar plaats vinden waar ieder risico voor drinkwaterwinning worden uitgesloten.

Schaliegasvoorraden
De belangrijkste schaliegasvoorraden van Nederland overlappen voor een belangrijk deel de grondwatervoorraden van Vitens. De Rijksoverheid heeft al meerdere opsporingsvergunningen voor onconventionele fossiele brandstoffen afgegeven, die ook voorzien in proefboringen. Zo ligt er een vergunning voor de gemeente Noordoostpolder. Daarnaast zijn er een aantal aanvragen gedaan voor vergunningen in Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland en Gelderland. Het betreft in de meeste gevallen een opsporingsvergunning. Voor de Provincie Utrecht gaat het om een gebied ter grootte van circa 60% van het grondgebied.
